“The Damnedest Thing” is based on the true-life World War 2 rescue of a group of high-ranking French prisoners (including former Prime Ministers and leaders of the French military) from a remote castle in Austria. Known as “The Battle of Castle Itter” it was the only time when American troops fought along side German soldiers and Austrian Resistance fighters as well as French prisoners to fend off an attack by murderous Waffen-SS troops. The novel weaves together the stories of three strong-willed individuals, Captain Jack Lee, who led the daring rescue operation, Sgt. Eddie Carter, one of the first African American soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor, and Evelynn Jacobs a war correspondent from Pittsburgh, PA. The book traces these three compelling characters from the pre-war years to the climactic rescue of the captive French dignitaries. It is a book packed with action, humor and derring-do.
